Dear Visitors,

When I first visited the village of Raghurajpur in Odisha, I was deeply moved by both the beauty and the uncertainty surrounding its traditional crafts. Generations of Pattachitra and Tussar artisans had kept these art forms alive with remarkable skill, yet many were struggling to sustain their work in today’s economy. Haven Crafts began as a way to help preserve that heritage while creating a fair and lasting livelihood for the people behind it.

At Haven Crafts, we collaborate directly with artisan families to bring their handmade textiles and homeware to a wider audience. There are no middlemen and no hidden costs. Every piece is made with care, and 100% of all profits go back to the artisans themselves, supporting fair wages, access to materials, education, and new opportunities for future generations.

Haven Crafts is a registered non-governmental organization (NGO) that exists entirely for the benefit of the communities it serves. Our goal is simple: to honor India’s craft traditions by helping the people who keep them alive to thrive with dignity and independence.

Thank you for being part of this journey and for believing, as we do, that heritage and humanity belong together.

Warm regards,

Rakhi Jain

CRAFTS OF ODISHA

Eight traditional crafts, each with distinct techniques and materials. Pattachitra paintings follow temple traditions over a thousand years old. Palm leaf artists etch entire scenes from the Ramayana and Mahabharata onto dried leaves. Applique makers earned a Geographical Indication tag in 2008 for their unique Odia style. Women artisans weave wild Kaincha grass from wetlands into lightweight, biodegradable baskets and home decor.

MEET THE CRAFTEPRENEURS

The artisans behind these crafts learned from parents and grandparents. Many work from home, balancing craft production with farming or other jobs. A golden grass artisan might spend three days on a single basket. A pattachitra painter mixes natural pigments the same way his grandfather did. They face competition from machine-made goods and rising material costs. Some adapt traditional designs for modern buyers. Others train apprentices in techniques their families have used for generations.

OUR PROGRAMS

A pattachitra painter might spend 40 hours on a single piece but sell it for less than materials cost. We teach artisans to price based on time and skill. They learn product photography, financial planning, and how to sell directly to customers online. The goal: fair pay for expert work.
